Afrophilia Agasna

Agasna is a dynamic litigator with an impressive record of success. Her forte is Civil litigation; in particular, she prosecutes and defends client’s interests in courts and tribunals. Despite her familiarity with litigation, she is very keen on Mediation and has always insisted that World War II would never have happened if people made an effort to talk. The number of matters Agasna has resolved out of court are almost as many as those she has prosecuted or defended. Probably the safest pair of hands we have around here. Agasna has a high reaching and vaulting personality and firmly believes that action conquers all. As managing partner, Agasna provides the defensive backbone and iron-fisted leadership without which our volleyball team could most definitely not have beaten Stewart Hails Fantastic Six (right?...such an unoriginal name).  Her nickname isn't Captain for nothing. Agasna clings to her youth by running, going to the gym regularly and hanging out at live music gigs. She’s occasionally violent once a week (she calls it kickboxing class, we call it don’t argue with her) but just ask about her dog Bisky and she’s marshmallow.  It’s always good to know where the soft spot is. When not on the clock, she has the sensibility of a fashion icon. If you need to know which cocktail dress will go best with your handbag, or you want to sell feathers to a bird, talk to Agasna. And yet, while Agasna does have a slightly dorky love of the law, she’d still prefer to tell you how natural hair is the in thing.

Kevin Othero

Kevin is strong willed and goes after what he’s passionate about fearlessly and he is passionate about the law. An astute Conveyancer, his stint at the Conveyancing and Corporate Department of Otieno, Ragot and Company Advocates set Kevin up as uniquely qualified in property transfers, perfecting loan securities, leases and servicing the operational needs of corporate and retainer clients. He's truly gifted in private law matters more so contracts and property law and can handle the entire gamut of mergers and acquisition if you like (he has precedents). Ridiculously intelligent and well qualified (whatever FDIT is, he’s got one), a qualification informed by his passion for all things techie/digital/nerdy, or creative, or preferably both. There’s just something so iconic, comical yet refreshing about him, when we first began operations, he insisted that our office email password should be ‘WeAreTheGovernment’ and it was non-negotiable...Grace tried (you don’t want to know the current one!). He then set up the Local Access Network (LAN) on all the computers at the office to enable us share files and information with ease, to show us how it works, he shared a few embarrassing baby pictures of the managing partner with the entire office. Kevin’s additional interests is in Legislative/Regulatory Drafting & Interpretation as well as International Commercial Transactions and has seen him draft an agreement for a merger and a constitution that cuts across jurisdiction for one of our multinational retainer clients. Kevin is the complete commercial lawyer...a star in fact (But that's just the public story) Behind the scenes, Kevin remains a clown, the clown who sends bogus emails from other colleagues' desks, who has the most irrelevant, unfamiliar phone applications like the ‘Sit and Squat’ (yes, that toilet finder app), the world's worst (but most enthusiastic) dancer and the start and finish of every party. When he’s not shamelessly lying about his sporting skills and baking prowess (neither of which even remotely exist), there’s no doubting his ability as a good lawyer (impressive) or his contribution to the social fabric of the firm (profound) and he can actually be a fun guy to be around.

Grace

Senior Litigation Clerk

What we do know is how incredibly hard working, smart, reliable and valuable Grace is to us and our clients. Whenever we need something done fast, right and completely (gracefully so to add)…Grace is the word.

Grace

Grace (pronounced Grace, not Graze – it seems obvious when you put it that way) is a key member of our exceedingly accomplished Support team. When there’s a workplace, then there’s Grace. The Office Bishop, Grace is currently pursuing a course in Theology and is probably the glue that holds thing together around here. Grace made an immediate impression on us during our first office party when she inadvertently made everyone stop what they were doing to listen to her mellow voice as she sang, we suspect she knows every gospel song ever written and she hits every social occasion like a tsunami, belting out gospel song after gospel song…even at office parties! Her assets include her ability to think on her feet, like every other deserving Preacher and the ability to sleep while standing up (handy at our longer-running parties). So she’s really quite useful, and one of the nicest people you’ll meet. The sunny disposition is deceptive however; in her endeavours to serve documents to adversaries, her reputation precedes her for her fearless willingness to throw her tiny body on the line and apply violence as a legitimate tactic.  They literally never see her coming. What we do know is how incredibly hard working, smart, reliable and valuable Grace is to us and our clients. Whenever we need something done fast, right and completely (gracefully so to add)…Grace is the word.

Strict, dependable, introverted, firm...did we mention strict. Here’s to Sylvia....for making sure the books balance, that we don’t go broke and to making sure, Kenya Revenue Authority maintains that misguided belief that we’re friends and we love them. We have come to accept the fact that Sylvia takes everything she does so seriously, from filing returns, to eating (her love for chicken is becoming too embarrassing to allow her to eat in public); she pays a little too much attention to detail and has since developed a one track mind….now she cannot even chew and walk at the same time. She is a lover of numbers with a pleasing propensity for saying randomly hilarious things when its least expected. True, she did say “I feel like, even if I said something really smart, you guys would laugh at me”, and then we laughed at her, but she also has an inspiring personal story and a warmth and generosity that define her as so much more than the somewhat patronising nickname we still insist on using.  Childlike delight is an underrated quality, don’t you know.

The newest member of our team, Philemon joined us while already accomplished. His experience working in restaurants keeps reassuring us that he’d already have dealt with more annoying customers than we could ever chuck at him. He then set about proving that it’s possible to work full time, study full time, and commute from a different town, all simultaneously, while still maintaining our reputation as a firm and knowing more about both Kenyan politics and the private lives of soccer stars than the rest of us combined. Maybe he never actually sleeps. We don’t really know. Philemon has learned fast about the soporific effects of due diligence and the unparalleled pleasures that await in your average share sale agreement. We generally try to avoid objectification, not just because it’s hard to spell, but it’s an objective fact that Philemon has the firm’s most athletic bone and surely it can’t be inappropriate to simply point that out.

Alfred Otieno

He’s been around for quite a while now, having started as an advisor to the founding partners and just never really left. Known to us for his brutal honesty, Alfred was and has been our pillar of support as the Office Administrator and we don’t know where we would be without him (certainly not here). We remember our inception stages when things were a bit rough and Alfred being who he is would try and reduce our stress levels by telling us absolutely totally ridiculous stories....and the more ridiculous thing was...they were true!!! Dude is a legend. The details are scratchy, relating somehow to what he really does here and it really does feel like Alfie was actually born here.  It would be unimaginable without him, anyway. Sometimes it does feel that Alfie was sent here purely for our entertainment, but that’s unfair and really just a reflection of how much fun he is to have around. We don’t know what we’d become be without our Alfie. Every office needs an Alfie (they don’t make them like him any more), so you can imagine how lucky we feel to have the authentic one.
